For a sixties art student the determination to work figuratively represented something of a protest against the prevailing fashion for abstract and later conceptual art. Taking the less travelled path, I was nevertheless fortunate in being able to follow at a respectful distance such masters as Frank Auerbach and Michael Andrews at the Slade.

For many years I struggled to find a middle way between the abstract and the figurative in which the figure and his environment were equal in importance and in which neither were specified in time or place. Gradually time and place and the specificity of the figure were to assume greater and greater importance. Having shied for many years away from the 'conventional' portrait, I began to realize that it was only through the minute observation and depiction of the individual that the wider statements that I had struggled to make as a young man, could be possible.

If figurative painting was unfashionable in the sixties, how much less so was still life painting! I found myself turning to it initially a few years ago primarily as an exercise, only to discover that here was another aspect of portraiture. I approach my still life subjects with the same awe and respect as I feel for the human subject.

In short what I am always seeking is to recreate and convey, in my portraits and in my still lifes, the mystery and power of 'presence'.

With many private and public portrait commissions I live in Gloucestershire, growing Cider apples and Quinces in my spare time.

I am willing to travel within Britain, requiring an initial day of familiarisation, with drawing and photography. Then a further three or four sittings are essential to establish a vibrant relationship. If travel abroad is necessitated then such expenses will be charged.
